ENVIRONMENTAL THRESHOLDS
THRESHOLDS OF REST
SITE
The site is an enormous piece of land at the Eastern waterfront of Mumbai near Sewri, Wadala on a basalt rock elevated 6 meters from the ground level.
The environment and the surrounding areas are mapped with factories, warehouses, small settlements, many transport trucks parked, and the Sewri Fort. The existing site has varied biodiversity in terms of its flora and fauna, including the chemical plants and the mangroves in its surroundings.
It is an industrial hub with settlements around. There is the dominance of workers in this area.
DESIGN INTENT
The surrounding has a dominance of workers. In the current scenario, the workers rest under the trucks or public benches or in the shadows of trees. The idea was to create a resting space for workers and create a comfortable environment for them.
They can also use this resting space for other activities like the communal theatre, etc.
Why people dominating an area are not provided with proper facilities?
How can the site create comfortable space and proper facilities for the workers?
DESIGN CONCEPT AND DIAGRAMMING
I considered different flows while designing a form. As my site was allowing all types of people to utilize the space, the main flow was to be considered the physical flow. the movement of people in my design was an important factor. I started to organize the space in such a way that the wetland conservatory would not be disturbed by the movement of people. thus, started placing the private spaces and public spaces in an order of flow of people.
As the site is following a slope towards the north-eastern side, I followed the slope and created levels which are connected by a series of steps and staircases.

IMAGINING THE SPACE
The idea was to create an open space with minimal enclosures. As the site is in Mumbai, which has a hot and humid climate the idea was to design an open space for ventilation and also create a space that visually connects all the spaces.
