Generative Bamboo Weaving

Designing a bamboo structure to create a generative and mesmerizing experience by using the method of weaving:

The process began with comprehending the word ‘Generative’ and the way they could inculcate it into the structure. Thus, considering the method of weaving and the material that is bamboo, the aim was to build a structure using smaller weaves that would multiply further and to create a pavilion-like structure.

The aim was to basically establish a weave or a pattern of weaving bamboo together, which would multiply and repeat itself to form a larger structure. The idea of the structure being ‘Generative’ came from the reference of the process of reproduction or multiplication that takes place in unicellular micro-organisms and bacteria. The idea was to join two bamboos together and create a weave such that it multiplies and creates two similar weaves at a certain distance, which would then multiply and create four weaves and so on.

The initial steps were to establish the curves using a structural grid and thus create a grid for the entire structure. The longer side was divided into seven parts and thus seven different arcs were determined in order to vary the height of the structure.

The bamboo members were anchored together and fixed in place using a concrete slab. These members were further tied together at each node in order to hold the structure.
